Discover Your Life Purpose in Your Birth Chart

Have you ever felt like you’re meant to fulfil something but you can’t quite put it into words?

Many people come to astrology with specific questions about career, relationships, family, or timing predictions. But there’s one question I hear again and again: What does my birth chart say about my life purpose?

In traditional astrology, your “purpose” isn’t limited to a job title or profession. It’s deeper than that. It points to the kind of life activities that helps you feel fulfilled, aligned, and a soul pattern that’s been with you from the start.

In The Soul’s Code, psychologist James Hillman writes that each person has a pattern that leads them toward a certain purpose and destiny, and that this pattern exists from the moment of birth. When a person recognizes and lives out this purpose, it not only gives reason to one’s existence, but also enhances the well-being of others in the world.

That’s a big part of why astrology can feel so validating: your chart doesn’t tell you who to be, it helps you remember what’s already true.

The 3 key points in your birth chart that I use to explore your life purpose

In Hellenistic astrology, the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon are central pillars of the chart and the key indicators where the vital force is more concentrated.

When we look at them together, we can start to see:

  • What motivates your soul to action.
  • What’s you’re here to develop.
  • How to manifest it into everyday life.

1) The Ascendant: your path and what drives you

Your Ascendant is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Think of it as the steering wheel of your life.

It speaks to:

  • The way you move through the world.
  • Your outer personality.
  • What pushes you into action.
  • The life path you’re continually pulled toward.
  • The planetary qualities that you express toward your life destination.

The element of your rising sign indicates what factors motivates you to action:

  • Fire rising: freedom, courage, leadership and power over your own life.
  • Earth rising: stability, security, building something real.
  • Air rising: learning, connection, sharing ideas without restriction, communication.
  • Water rising: intuition, emotional support, security, and intimacy.

Then we look at the planet ruler of the Ascendant who is the planet that steers your life journey. Its placement points to the life activities that guide you toward your purpose, and where you’re meant to grow, focus, and evolve.

2) The Sun: the intention of your soul

Your Sun is your core vitality, who you are at a core level, and it reflects the themes of your soul purpose you’re here to embody.

In a purpose-focused reading, the Sun sign and your Leo house shows:

  • Where the life purpose expresses itself.
  • Choices that illuminate your life purpose.
  • What you’re here to develop over time and bring meaning to your life.
  • The kind of contribution you’re here to make.

The house placement of your natal Sun reveals the actions in your life where your life purpose wants to express: through creativity, leadership, family, career, partnerships, service, learning, community, healing, teaching and more.

3) The Moon: how you embody it in real life

If the Sun is the intention, the Moon is the embodiment where intention becomes real.

The Moon relates to:

  • Your emotional needs, feelings, childhood and mother.
  • How you anchor your  Sun intention in everyday life.
  • How you process and respond to life and security needs.
  • What activities fulfil your purpose.

In purpose work, the Moon answers: How do I nurture my life purpose day to day?

I also look at the eight phases of the Moon and which one you were born in this life time. This is very important because indicates the type of energy that the Sun and Moon utilise in order to moving you to your destiny. It also describes the deeper season of your inner development, and the kind of growth cycle you’re working with in this lifetime.

The relationship between your Ascendant, Sun, and Moon reveals the foundations of your life purpose. Their condition in your birth chart shows how your purpose is likely to unfold through the houses they rule and occupy. If there’s another planets with the ASC, Sun or Moon we are also going to blend their qualities.
